Entereg

1 What is Entereg?

Brand: Entereg

Generic: Alvimopan

Entereg is a peripherally acting µ-opioid receptor antagonist which is usually used for the treatment of postoperative ileus and constipation following abdominal surgery.

Administration of alvimopan orally before and after surgery hastens recovery of bowel function. It acts by blocking the effects of certain opioid receptors.

In addition, it helps the stomach and bowel muscles to move properly. It is usually given to the patients in the hospital or under direct supervision of a health professional.

Excessive use of this drug beyond the therapeutic dose and schedule may arise some undesirable effects, which often warrant immediate medical help.

2 What to Know Before Using

Before using Entereg, you must know all about the risks and complications associated with it. Certain factors are responsible for any alteration of the drug action.

Present and past illness, drug interactions, hypersensitivity reactions, pregnancy, lactation and metabolic impairments should be considered before you start this drug therapy.

There are certain medical conditions which may cause interactions with alvimopan, especially when you are suffering from chronic pain, liver and renal problems.

If you have allergies to any particular drugs, you should tell your doctor. Additionally, history of pancreas and stomach surgery, suspected bowel blockade, pregnancy and lactation contradict the use of such medication.

You should not take medicines without prior consultation. You should give adequate information to the doctor about the drug therapy you are receiving.

Some drugs should not be taken when you are prescribed alvimopan. For example, opioids (e.g. codeine) are avoided with alvimopan therapy. You should ask your health professional the list of drugs which should not be taken.

You should follow the doctor's directions and advices.

Some laboratory investigations including complete bood counts and potassium levels should be carried out during alvimopan therapy. These tests are usually recommended to monitor your health status in response to alvimopan.

There are no well-controlled studies suggesting use of the drug safe in pregnancy and lactation. Potential benefits may warrant the use of alvimopan in pregnant women and during lactation but should be administered cautiously.
