Dentist Questions tooth pain

Can I take pain medicine for tooth pain?

My tooth hurts really bad, but I can't tell which one. Just that it's on my left side, on the bottom... somewhere in the back. Do you think it's okay to just take pain medicine for it? Or should I just get an appointment with my dentist first?

Yes but only ones prescribed for you by a physician or dentist. Do not take someone else’s medication!
You can take pain meds, but need to see a doctor ASAP.
Call your dentist. Tell whomever is answering the phone that you have severe PAIN. More than likely you will be given an appointment to see your dentist ASAP. Ask about what you can do for the pain. You did not indicate what your pain medicine was. If it is over the counter, ibuprofen, or acetaminophen. Ibuprofen long time use can damage your kidneys while tylenol in large doses can damage or destroy your liver. You may need an antibiotic. The most important fact is to find what is causing the pain and take care of it..
You can take over the counter Tylenol or Advil. (please read the directions on maximum dosage and safety) You can actually alternate both meds. It's called piggy backing. Taken in this fashion they can be more effective than a narcotic.
You should see a dentist. ASAP!
You can take pain medicine to keep you comfortable, but you need to see a dentist ASAP. The pain will most likely not improve until it is properly treated.

If you are having very bad pain, you can take over-the-counter pain meds which you are not allergic to and if you don't have any other underlying medical issues and are not taking any other over-the-counter pain meds (only for a short relief of pain, just like any other pains). Call your dentist as soon as possible so they can take an X-ray and diagnose and treat the problem.
I hope you will take care of your pain as soon as possible. Take care.
It feels like you have a radiating pain. I would recommend you make an appointment with the dentist to evaluate the cause of the pain.
Thanks.
Make an appointment with your dentist and they can determine which tooth is causing the pain
While it is OK to take pain meds for tooth pain, I would recommend that you make an appointment with your dentist in order to determine the actual cause. The earlier a problem is addressed, the less extensive the treatment needed. I would recommend that you do NOT take any pain meds the day of your appointment so that you do not mask any symptoms.

There is a cause for that pain and you should have a dentist find out what it is. The medication may keep you comfortable but the source of the pain needs to be addressed. If there is an abscess the medication will only temporarily make you feel better.
Hi,

Definitely see your dentist! Taking pain meds will help for a short time, so unless you want to be popping pills indefinitely and possibly damage your liver, get it properly treated.
Hope this helped!
