I am unfamiliar with acupressure mats so I can't give you a definitive answer. They probably have nobs at certain points to try to correlate with acupuncture points on the back. But people are different heights, so it would be difficult to know if they are hitting YOUR points. If they are, they might well be helpful, and I can't see any reason why it wouldn't be safe.
Hope this helps.

There are no true "quick fixes" for our physical or emotional bodies. It takes time for real healing to occur. Having said that, you will most likely start to feel changes within a treatment or two. It does take time for those changes to stick, so it's important to commit to a series of treatments. I start out seeing patients twice a week until their symptoms stay reduced the whole time, then I see them once a week, then every other week, and so on, This usually takes months, but it IS effective, so I encourage you to find someone who has worked with anxiety in the past and then stick with it. You'll be so glad you did.
FYI, a LOT of insurances are now covering acupuncture, so check with your insurance to see if it's one of them.

The shorter answer would be what acupuncture CAN'T treat. About the only things I won't treat are an active heart attack or acute appendicitis. Remember, by some accounts, acupuncture is up to 5000 years old, and for most of that time was the only form of medicine being used in those countries. They pretty much figured out how to treat everything using needles, herbal formulas, and exercise. So call around and check with your local practitioners to see if they have had success treating whatever issues you have going. We all have our specialties, so call til you find someone who can address what's going on with you.

As to how they work, it's the same as how any other acupuncture point works. Each point has a function(s), and stimulating them with a needle or a seed activates that function to cause the body to heal itself. They are very effective.
I would suggest you see an acupuncturist for your migraines. There are lots of ways to treat them.

That's a difficult question to answer. When I get patients with back pain, I usually have excellent luck relieving their pain. But if I haven't made any progress after 9 or 10 treatments, I suggest they see a chiropractor because at that point it usually means that the spine is out, preventing the acupuncture from doing its job. Doing both at the same time is fabulous if your insurance will cover both - they help each other hold.

Treating arthritis isn't a one-shot deal. It takes a series of treatments, usually a couple times a week for several weeks. Once the pain goes down and stays down between treatments, then I spread them out to once a week, then once every two weeks, etc., until the pain stays down or gone. Then you're good to go. If something starts to hurt again, I recommend that patients come back right away for a treatment or two to take care of it.

Each practitioner has their own approach, so I can't tell you how they will treat your knee. Some use local points, some use meridian therapy. But they all work on the energy flowing through your knee. But it's about healing, not covering up the pain.
