The popping can be from the IT band which is the long flat fascia muscle that extends from the hip down to your knee. It can also be due to snapping of the hip joint itself from the labrum. The labrum is a cartilage ring around the hip socket. It’s usually associated with pain and catching in the joint. It’s usually diagnosed on exam and an MRI of the hip.

The implants are better now and there are minimally invasive techniques that will allow a more rapid recovery and ability to weight bear immediately following surgery. I bet that your knees will feel better as well.

Typically swelling in the joint is the body's natural response to lubricate the joint because of something irritating it. Whether that is due to wear and tear, or something more acute such as a meniscal tear. I would say if it keeps happening you should get an X-ray and possibly an MRI. See your Dr if these symptoms persist. In the meantime ice, ace wrap compression, and OTC NSAIDs (i.e. Ibuprofen, aleve) as tolerated.

Most all of us will experience lower back pain in our lifetime most of the time it will be self limiting, improve on its own. Try lying in the 90/90 position with your lower legs on an ottteman with your hips at 90 degrees as well. There are numerous lower back stretching exercises you can do as well. Look them up on the internet. McKenzie exercises are helpful as well.

Having said that, it's safe for him to rehabilitate his knee, regain the ROM and strength before returning to sports again.

If it bothers you I would see a hand surgeon for a corrective osteotomy, where they break the bone and straighten it. Of course that would be done under an anesthetic.
