It depends on the body area, but generally not far at all. Sometimes they are just tapped in, I would say 1/4" or less of depth on average in my sessions.

At a minimum, if you just want to support fertility and don't have any known fertility problems, I would go in at least 3 months before you start "actively" trying to get pregnant. Personally - as soon as I started thinking about getting pregnant, I started asking my acupuncturist to start supporting my fertility. I can definitely say - it works!
