How Do Smooth Threads Work
Before & Preparation
Patients wanting to undergo PDO smooth thread treatment should be aware of the following:
-Avoid using blood thinning medications. These can include Advil, Ibuprofen, Aleve, and Aspirin.
-Avoid the use of Herbal supplements. These include Omega 3's and St. John's Wort.
-Avoid the use of alcohol for at least three days before your appointment.
-Arrive at the appointment free of makeup
During the Smooth PDO Thread Procedure
The treatment is relatively quick and typically completed in about 30 minutes. Dr. Perrone will take care to ensure your comfort during and after the procedure. Some patients feel slight discomfort during the procedure, and Dr. Perrone offers anesthesia for those patients who want it.

A general outline of the procedure includes:
- Seated in a dental chair that is reclined, Marielaina Perrone DDS will disinfect your face using alcohol and chlorhexidine. A topical anesthetic will be used where PDO threads will be applied.
- Next, a vein finder will be used. This will allow Dr. Perrone to apply threads safely and potentially avoid bruising.
- Areas to be treated will be mapped out. Sizes and patterns of placement will be determined at this point.
- The PDO threads are inserted through the skin into the stubborn lines or scar tissue. They are twisted three times and then removed. That leaves the threads in place so they can rebuild actual collagen to flatten wrinkles and smooth acne scars.
You will be free to go home shortly after the procedure is complete.
Smooth PDO Thread Recovery
There are just a few precautions following the completion of treatment. Recovery from a smooth PDO thread procedure is relatively minimal. You may experience some swelling and bruise in the first 24 to 48 hours, but you typically can return to most of your daily activities immediately. On day 1, you will be advised to use arnica gel on the face, arnica tablets under the tongue, and gel ice packs applied gently to the area.
You should avoid rubbing areas of treatment as much as possible for about seven days following your procedure to avoid accidentally dislodging the threads. Dr. Perrone will also advise you to avoid heat directly on the face as it can melt the PDO threads and diminish their effectiveness.
Other activities you may want to avoid for about one week include sleeping on your face, facials, and a direct shower stream on your face.
Sleeping with your head propped on a pillow can help to avoid accidentally rolling onto your face during the middle of the night.
