Alleviating the swelling is your first priority. Ice and some exercise, once the cause of the swelling has been established. More injury could occur if you overwork the knee, while swollen.

That is not a simple answer. Movement can help but it depends on what is causing the swelling. There is an innovative technique Cox Flexion Distraction Certified providers have that takes 30 seconds and for me has over a 98% success rate with over 115 people treated. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwj9rIeI1_aEAxWpL9AFHRQVDKIQFnoECCEQAQ&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov%2Fpmc%2Farticles%2FPMC5596966%2F&usg=AOvVaw3GgwmjhJ-woaVS3gxIEvY8&opi=89978449 Shawn Nelson DC Pointes Chiropractic PLLC 22930 East 9 Mile Rd. Swollen knees are best managed with Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. Exercise is best deferred till the swelling is down. Ice 20 minutes at a time, with an hour or two between icings. Elevation of the legs above your heart daily for 20-30 minutes. Compression with either an Ace bandage or a Velcro knee brace (Drug store item) however long it's swollen helps the fluid be reabsorbed. If it's still painful or unstable once the swelling is down, see your Chiropractor, Physical Therapist or Athletic Trainer.
