I will have surgery under spinal anesthesia. Can spinal anesthesia cause any issues?

Spinal anesthesia is safe and effective. As with any procedure, there are issues that can affect the choice of anesthesia. It is important to let the anesthesia provider know if you are taking blood thinners. Post spinal headache can occur but is rare and usually resolves with time and does not lead to long term problems.

This is a conversation to have with your anesthesiologist who is a trained medical doctor with additional 4 to 9 years of post-graduate training, especially if they have specialized. If you trust your surgeon, trust that they have a good team which includes an anesthesiologist that they probably work with on every case. To just give you a laundry list of spinal anesthesia complications does you no good, you need to know if YOUR anesthesiologist has had those complications.
