“How long should you rest after cataract surgery?”
I am a 64 year old female. I want to know how long should you rest after cataract surgery?

Your surgeon will give you instructions on post-operative care and what activities should be avoided.
It should rest for 2 minutes, but the patient undergoing surgery generally “rests” for the remainder of the day. On the other hand, precise post-op instructions vary for each patient, each variety of cataract surgery (not every eye and every surgery are the same) and for each surgeon. It is always best to seek clarification from your own surgeon’s staff.

Hello, and thank you for your question.
Cataract surgery is a relatively minor procedure, and the the recovery time is pretty minimal. I tell my patients they should be able to drive the next day or the day after surgery. I also tell them they can do normal activities around the house—bending over, minor cleaning and/or cooking, but no heavy lifting and no vigorous exercise for at least 4-5 days. Just use common sense and take it easy for a few days. After about a week, with a few exceptions which you can discuss with your doctor, you can resume all normal activities.
Hope this helps. Thanks, take care, and good luck with your surgery.

There is no set period of time that is required to rest after cataract surgery. It depends on the individual and the post-op protocol of your eye surgeon. Some people go shopping and even play golf, while others go home and rest during the few hours after surgery. The important post op instructions are using your eye medications as directed and protecting your eye from injury and keeping your early post-op eye exams.
There is no bed rest restriction after cataract surgery. Generally you should avoid heavy lifting or bending over for a week.

You are young enough at 64 to recover rapidly from cataract surgery. You should sleep your normal hours, apply eye drops as prescribed and limit any activity that might put the operated eye at risk. By one week, all should be back to normal.
