“How long will the effects of anesthesia last after surgery?”
I will have surgery under general anesthesia. How long will the effects of anesthesia last after surgery, and what can I expect in terms of recovery and regaining consciousness?

If you receive primarily inhalation anesthesia (after being 'put to sleep' with an amnestic--propofol) only minutes after you stop receiving the 'gas' you will be fully awake. The real cause of waking up 'slow' is dependent on what else did you receive? Narcotic(s) so you don't wake up in pain, medicine (antiemetics) so you're not nauseated and/or sedatives so you weren't too nervous receiving a general anesthetic. All these things work together to provide a smooth anesthetic experience. Everyone metabolizes these medicines differently. Until you've had these medications, no one can tell you exactly how you will respond to them.
