How to treat a hematoma on my leg?

I am a 60-year-old diabetic, on blood thinners. I fell and hit my shin on a step. I have a bruise and knot on the back of my leg. How do I treat it?

The following are my thoughts, and sometimes my tips and suggestions in response to your inquiry:

I am sorry to hear about your recent trauma and the resultant hematoma. Hematoma is formed when blood vessels become broken or torn (or swollen and leaky) and the blood and fluids enter the spaces between the muscle fibers and fascia (mesh of soft tissue that supports muscles, joints and bones). When on blood thinners, a smaller amount of force can cause this hematoma formation to occur. This link (https://www.pop-doc.com/joint-preactive.html) can offer some insights into how to recover and heal from this. By 2-5 days after the hematoma forms, if it is not getting better, then a trip to a caring and knowledgeable doctor is suggested.

Moist heat compress (5-7 mins) followed by ice packs for 30 mins or more and compression wrapping after that, especially while up walking, etc.
Dear patient: ice for 15 minutes every few hours, but see your physician to be sure you only have a hematoma.
