I was diagnosed with a colon polyp. Is colon polyp serious?

Most colon polyps are benign. If they can be removed endoscopically that is a cure for that polyp. Some polyps, however, are pre-cancerous and or cancerous, and require potentially more treatment. Usually the recommendation is to have a repeat colonoscopy within 3 to 5 years to reevaluate the colon for more polyps, and potentially remove them if they are there.
That depends - most are asymptomatic and found on screening colonoscopy. Polys become of concern based on multiple factors, especially if their family history is a family history colon cancer. If the large polyps (>1cm in size), gross appearance, histology and degree of dysplasia (high grade dysplasia is intermediate step to cancer).
The polyps must be removed or increased risk for cancer over time, if not benign polyps or some polyps left behind during colonoscopy
