disc herniations are really terrible and can cause all sorts of unwanted pain. The best thing to do is to get treatment for your disc herniation. There isn't a lot out there to treat disc herniations unfortunately; Physical Therapy, "non-surgical spinal decompression" on a machine like the DRX-9000, medications like gabapentin, nerve ablations, epidurals, minimally invasive surgery (like microdiscectomy), and surgical fusion. If you were looking for at-home things, ice will be your best friend, or a properly fitted brace for your back like a "lumbosacral orthosis" while your walking could also help.
The best thing you can do for yourself is take care of the disc herniation. The pain upon waking or sitting is a result of the irritation by the disc on the nerve. I suggest you look into Cox Distraction and or VAX-D to decompress the disc and nerves. Jay H Schwartz, DC, DIBCN, DIBE

I strongly recommend looking into non-surgical spinal decompression therapy. It works better than anything else to heal herniated discs. Icing can be very helpful for discs in the meantime. Twenty minutes of each hour. Better to put a shirt or towel between your skin and the ice so you don't get burned. Have you tried icing or steroids? Have you ever been adjusted with some sort of distraction or traction? these types of treatment work well for disc herniations. we do all these things at my office and have good results.
