Ideally it should be done by a chiropractor. In moderation, the answer is no. Studies have shown that occasionally cracking your back can help relieve pressure in your spine without adverse effects. However, when done habitually, popping can cause excessive wear on your joints and potentially lead to premature breakdown. You should always consult with a chiropractor.
It is not "bad" but you are not mobilizing the correct segment when you do this. It is best to seek professional manipulation from a Chiropractor if you are having pain or stiffness in your spine.
Cracking your back by twisting is not necessarily bad for you, but it may not be correcting the underlying problem. If you find that you have to crack your back often to relieve discomfort, there may be something going on that needs to be uncovered. Make an appointment to have if checked. Your chiropractor should do a thorough exam and take a good history.
