Yes.
In my experience, it can be. But it would depend on what is causing the TMJ. TMJ has different triggers.
ANY MASSAGE RELAXES US. HOWEVER IT CAN'T TREAT TMJ DISORDER.
Massage is one of the treatment modalities that can help with TMJ problems. This depends on examination. TMJ can be a chiropractic, dental and/or medical issue and this needs to be determined. Massage can relax the masseter muscles along with exercises, stress reduction and chiropractic treatment. However, it may also be a dental or medical problem.
If the therapist is proficient/knowledgeable in TMJ techniques, then yes, massage can be very helpful for TMJ problems.
A massage might be beneficial, since muscles surround the temporal-mandibular joint. When I first started as a Chiropractor, I would adjust the TMJ and apply physical therapy modalities to release pain. As time went on, I learned how to help TMJ without manipulation and quickly. Today, I can fix TMJ fast and gently.
Yes, massage will help the surrounding muscles of the TMJ. Once those adhesions (knots) are released, you should experience some form of relief, especially if it’s stress related.
Find a massage therapist that specializes in ART (Active Release Techniques).
