Reflections by an early adopter Endocrinologist with 34 years of experience about weight
Such a problem, obesity, affects 75% of the population. About 42% of the population is obese with a BMI of over 30 (body mass index). A normal BMI is less than 25, obese is over 30, malignant obesity is over 40. About 9% (one of every 11 persons) is massively overweight with a BMI over 40. When I...
I am diabetic and I feel very hungry. What can I do?
If you are hungry, that is the goal. That means you are probably losing weight. This feeling needs to be embraced. Easy to say. READ MORE
Can diabetes cause muscle weakness?
There needs to be more information, however let's say that someone has poor control of the diabetes for 14 years then there can be a development of neuropathy and muscle wasting. How old is she? Let's say she is young such as 50, controlling the diabetes and beginning an exercise program might help. Much has to do with the severity of the neuropathy if she has it. READ MORE
Does Metformin ensure that I won't have diabetes because of my PCOD?
I presume you mean PCOS (polycystic ovary disease). Measuring insulin levels are not valuable. The normal levels are not clearly defined. However PCOS is associated with insulin resistance. Metformin helps this and sometimes the menstrual cycle returns to normal. It also prevents diabetes form developing. No it does not guarantee, as there are no guarantees in life, that you won't get diabetes. It decreases the incidence by 30%. As we all know, a healthy and active lifestyle with a normal weight may keep diabetes at bay for over a decade or even longer. There is no escape from doing what we all know we should be doing, though it is hard. READ MORE
Will eating fruits every day increase my sugar levels?
This question and many questions can be answered by what happens with monitoring. I recommend a continuous glucose monitor, I would not eat unless the glucose is less that 120 and eat slowly, slowly with a downward arrow on the glucose monitor. Stop eating when the glucose measures 140. Usually fruit does raise the sugar. Miralax works well. Best Dr. Norwood READ MORE
Deka in covid-19?
Well, you should be concerned however there is something you can do. If you become very athletic, stay slim with a Body Mass index that is below 25, and eat healthy foods one can delay diabetes up to 20 years. Thus you may obtain diabetes if you are 50 with poor habits but not see it until 70 if you stay buff. Now who really knows if you will develop diabetes if you are not as careful with your lifestyle. I promise however, if you live a healthy life, you will have a life that is much more rewarding. Best Dr. Norwood READ MORE
Can I ever stop using insulin?
I have seen patients stop insulin if they have something to reverse such as a poor diet, excess weight, and lack of exercise. I have seen patients stop insulin after a gastric bypass. So, if the problem is lifestyle, then sometimes straightening this out can reverse the insulin resistance and the body can go back to insulin sensitivity. Regretfully, it is rare if people change, but I have seen it. There is nothing new about living a healthy, active life. Do people wake up one day and start having one? Sometimes. READ MORE

How does tablet Ondero help to control my diabetes?
Ondero blocks the degration of a hormone in our body, Glp-1. Glp1 is made in the intestines and when one eats, it is released, then it goes to the pancreas, and then it causes release of insulin only if the glucose is elevated. I find ondero week and prefer the injectable weekly Glp-1 medications such as trulicity, ozempic, bydureon. There however is some nausea sometimes with the injectable but they work much better. I actually never us ondero because it is expensive and less effective. The side effect profile is very good though. READ MORE
What is the best way to keep type 2 diabetes at bay?
The best thing is to be athletic and eat a healthy diet. Duh. I know you know that. I have little information here so I can't say much more. A continuous monitor is really beneficial and I place this on my patients as much as possible. Eats few carbs, eat less often. Do what it takes to keeps the glucose in normal range. Check the glucose often. READ MORE
What is the best spot in the body for insulin injections?
The eyeball, just kidding. Theoretically the abdominal area has the most regular absortion. There is a thought that the thigh and the arms absorb faster however I have many patients who use these areas without problems. READ MORE
Does uncontrolled diabetes cause low hemoglobin?
There is little information here. Age, kidney function, menstrual function. But let’s say that the diabetes has truly lasted only five years and there are no other medical problems whatsoever, then no, the diabetes does not cause anemia. READ MORE
Can prediabetes numbers be managed with just diet alterations?
It is well known that metformin can help prevent diabetes. READ MORE
If I have diabetes, do I have higher chances of having an overactive thyroid?
It depends on the type of diabetes. Type 1 diabetics who have an autoimmune condition (antibodies attack the islet cells that damages them and thus there is a serious decrease in insulin, or even no insulin production), do have increased thyroid problems. Thyroid problems however is very common in the population at large. Best Dr. Norwood READ MORE
Is it possible for a 34 year old to suffer from diabetic neuropathy?
Well, there is little information here. How long have you had diabetes? What is the pain like? Burning? Pins and needles? Do the sheets bother you? Is there any numbness? But the answer is YES, a 34 year old can suffer from diabetic neuropathy. READ MORE
Can diabetes cause frequent urinary infections?
Yes, poor diabetic control lowers immunity and all infections are more prevalent. Diabetes with good diabetes control have similar infection rates and covid survival as to non diabetics. Diabetes who haven't exercised, are not strong, and are overweight have a poor survival rate to covid and develop more viruses, fungal infections of the genitals and feet. Onycomycosis (toenail fungal infections) is very common in diabetics. . So what's the message, have a healthy lifestyle. The real difference between a diabetic and a non diabetic is that even though everyone should have a good lifestyle, a diabetic must have one. Paul Norwood MD, FACE Endocrinologist READ MORE
Can you take insulin without needles?
Yes, there is inhaled insulin Afrezza. It works well however there is no insulin for overnight 99.9% of persons can deal with the tiny nanoneedle. It is so tiny it can hardly be seen. It is normal to not want shots. Who does but after the first one it becomes no big deal. It is psychologically traumatic just for a moment generally. READ MORE
Can diabetes be reversed if diagnosed early?
Well there is little information here. Is he overweight? How high are the glucose levels? However let me make someone up. Let's say he is 5 foot and 10 inches (5'10") and 240 pounds. Let's say his glucose levels fasting are about 160 mg/dl . Thus he is really overweight and he is still making insulin since his glucose is still in the 100's. If he changes his lifestyle, loses weight (let's say 50 pounds) and gains muscle mass by exercising, then yes he could control his diabetes with probably 1 medication, metformin. Metformin helps the body use less insulin thus protecting overuse of the insulin supply. I am so sorry to tell you that I only see someone do this rarely. Let us say there is nothing new about having a healthy lifestyle. With life so precious it is a little be of a mystery of why so few have one. 75 percent of Americans are overweight, 9% are massively obese and 42% are obese with a BMI (body mass index) of over 30. No. Easy one. READ MORE
Which fruits are okay for a diabetes patient?
It depends. There is little information here. What is the weight? How is the control? Does he exercise? However, having an apple or orange as a meal usually is fine. Or a quarter of one with a meal. The greatest answer is really what happens to the glucose levels when he has a fruit. If it leaps up, then that's a no no. If the glucose doesn't jump, then we are in good shape. I am having a lot of pain in my legs. Could it be diabetic neuropathy?
Usually with neuropathy, there is no pulling. There is first a tingling, then a burning. The feet may be tender to touch. One of the first sensations to go with neuropathy is vibration. I use a tuning fork to see if the patient can feel vibration. Do the sheets hurt? Do the feet feel cold? Pulling doesn't sound right to me, but it could be neuropathy. I have seen stranger things.
