What does recovery time look like for UPPP surgery?
My advice would be to get a second opinion. That surgery is a VERY difficult recovery, and the results are very mixed. Statistically, the best he could hope for is to be able to reduce the setting on his CPAP machine. The chance of him "curing" his sleep apnea with a UPPP is slim, and it is a significant procedure to undergo for the results. He should have a consult with a maxillofacial surgeon to evaluate if his jaw position is possibly the reason for his apnea, and there may be better options for a more positive result. READ MORE
Risk of nerve damage during impacted wisdom tooth surgery?
Yes, if they are lower teeth. The risk is typically low, but they should be able to tell how close the teeth are to the nerve with appropriate X-rays. The best way to view that at this time is having a cone beam CT done, which are common in most good oral/maxillofacial offices. They need to balance the risk of the nerve injury with what the risk of NOT taking the teeth out would be. READ MORE
Adult tooth is loose. What should I do?
Go to your regular dentist for an evaluation. They may need to splint the tooth temporarily for it to heal. You will risk losing the tooth otherwise. READ MORE
What can I expect after oral surgery?
Depends on the surgery and the surgeon. I would typically tell my patients to expect 2-3 days of soreness, mild swelling, but back to routine activity pretty quickly. READ MORE
Is surgery helpful in treating sleep apnea?
Yes. If that is the reason for your apnea, going through the jaw repositioning surgery would essentially cure you of your sleep apnea. There should be an evaluation as to whether the upper AND lower jaw should be moved forward for a better result, or just the lower. You will likely need an evaluation with an orthodontist along with the surgeon. Make sure you see someone who is board certified and that has a lot of experience with that type of surgery (does more than 30 a year) and experience treating patients with sleep apnea. The general term for that type of surgery is "orthognathic" surgery. READ MORE
Fear of local anaesthetic allergy
With the type of local anesthetics we use today, and allergic reaction (much less an anaphylactic one) would be extremely rare. I have not had a patient in over 20 years with a true allergic reaction to these types of local. READ MORE
What are the possible treatments available for dental cysts?
Depending on what the reason for them are, they may be treatable with a root canal and no actual surgery. If they are developmental cysts, you should definitely get them treated, as they need to be biopsied to determine what type of cyst it is. They could be a type that could require additional surgery, and this would keep getting worse if left alone. READ MORE
I have a hard bump in my gums after my tooth extraction. What can I do?
They might be bony irregularities, and if not painful the advice would be to just leave them alone. You could have them smoothed down or removed, but that would require additional surgery. READ MORE
My son is allergic to milk. I am concerned about his teeth. What can I do?
Milk is actually a poor source of nutritional calcium, you should discuss this with his pediatrician and get their advice. This will likely not affect his teeth to any real extent. READ MORE
Are there any special oral routine for pregnant mothers and Infants?
Make sure you have a fluoridated water supply, or add it if you drink water that has none. See a child dental specialist once they have their full complement of baby teeth. Those are very important to maintain until the adult teeth come in! READ MORE
I had a cold drink after my root canal treatment. Could it cause a problem?
No, you should be fine. READ MORE
My daughter is 5 years old and has been recommended a root canal surgery. What should I do?
The baby teeth are important to try to keep as they guide the adult teeth to come into place correctly. Try to let them save it if they can! READ MORE
My wisdom tooth hurts a lot. Is extraction the only option?
Yes, there is likely little else that would work to permanently resolve the issue and it could lead to problems with the tooth in front of it. READ MORE
I drink cold drinks very frequently. I am now having some numbness. Could it be because of my cold drink intake?
Possibly. Depending on the symptoms, it could also be a host of other issues. You should see either your general dentist, or an oral surgeon to have an X-ray and make sure there are no other underlying problems. READ MORE
My wisdom tooth is aching. Is it better to have it extracted?
Typically yes, but depends on the tooth position, your age, and the health of the adjacent teeth. You should have an X-ray and evaluation, as this could continue to get worse and possibly involve other teeth requiring more treatment. READ MORE
