Dr. Patrick A Abbey D.M.D's Expert Contributions
  • How should I prepare for a tooth extraction?

You don't need to do anything special beforehand READ MORE

  • Is lock jaw the same thing as TMJ?

Sometimes those terms can relate to the same underlying diagnosis, sometimes they can mean different things. READ MORE

  • Can maxillofacial surgery be used in treating jaw diseases?

Have you tried an occlusal splint (special type of night guard applicance)? Physical therapy? Those things might help as well, and make you feel good enough you don't want surgery. READ MORE

  • How do they fix your jaw if it is misaligned?

First, they need to diagnose exactly WHAT is misaligned. Surgery may involve repositioning of the upper, lower, or both jaws to correct. You will need xrays, a clinical exam, and possibly consultation with an orthodontist along with your surgeon to formulate a plan. READ MORE

  • Can grinding your teeth cause TMJ?

It could, but doesn't always lead to that type of pain. Your best bet, even just for the long term stability of your teeth, is to see someone and have a night guard appliance made to wear nightly. READ MORE

  • Do I need to remove the cyst in my mouth?

Yes. It could be many different things, some of them dangerous to your long term health. They need to have a pathologist look at the cyst under a microscope to definitively diagnose what type of lesion it is. READ MORE

  • Do I need to remove the cyst under molar?

YES. This could be one of several dangerous variants of a lesion, and the only way to determine what it is would be to remove it, send it to a pathologist to look at under a microscope, and get a firm diagnosis. It may lead to the need for further treatment, depending on what it is. READ MORE

  • Do I need to remove all 4 wisdom teeth?

It would be worth having someone consult you in that regard. If they are COMPLETELY erupted, they may not be a big risk to leave alone. If not, they need to determine how risky they would be to the teeth in front of them over the years. READ MORE

  • How long is the recovery for a wisdom tooth extraction?

It depends on the degree of impaction, and everyone is different. Typically it would be only 2-3 days, and if your regular dentist is doing the extractions, it may be because they are more simple (which is good for you!). READ MORE

  • Is TMJ genetic?

It is not a direct genetic pathway, but sometimes the issues can be caused by jaw growth problems or issues with the way your teeth meet. This could be passed on to her and put her at risk. Best to have her evaluated by an orthodontist at an early age, typically after the first round of baby teeth are lost. READ MORE

  • Does an oral surgeon treat TMJ?

Some do, but not all. You should look up board certified oral/maxillofacial surgeons in your area and call them to inquire. Beware of so called "TMJ Specialists", as there is actually no such recognized specialty by the ADA and a lot of them don't practice with the best of intentions. READ MORE

  • How can I strengthen the soft tissues in my jaw?

That is typically a genetic issue, like having "thin skin". There isn't much to do to change it, but it might warrant more regular hygiene follow up with them to reduce the risk for bone loss or recession. READ MORE

  • What should I do to prepare for jaw corrective surgery?

That surgery is more typically done under a general anesthesia in the hospital. I would expect that you would have a pre-op appointment with your surgeon, and those would be appropriate questions to ask them at that time. There is not much else to do, other than enjoy some nice meals! READ MORE

  • Should I remove a gum cyst?

Yes, they need to determine what type of cyst it is and whether it requires more treatment. READ MORE

  • Is jaw cancer curable?

It all depends on the type of cancer you are being treated for. This would be a question for your surgeon and/or oncologist, but there are many types that have a high survival rate. READ MORE

  • Is general anesthesia sometimes used for wisdom tooth extractions?

Typically, anesthesia via an IV is sufficient. You will not remember the procedure, but this type of treatment can be done safely in an office outpatient setting without going to a hospital and you will not need to be intubated (breathing tube). Make sure the person you are seeing is a board certified OMS. READ MORE

  • Is a dental cyst dangerous?

it could be. There is no way to distinguish which type of cyst is there from just an xray. There are several more dangerous, destructive types of lesion that need to be ruled out, and that's why it should be removed and biopsied. If it is large, it may need a small biopsy done FIRST, then after the diagnosis the appropriate plan for removal determined. READ MORE

  • How long is a root canal procedure?

They are typically very fast and with one appointment these days. It would be best done by a root canal specialist (Endodontist) READ MORE

  • Is a wisdom tooth extraction painful?

Typically not. It will be sore for usually 3-4 days at the most. This is typically the worse about 24-36 hours after the surgery. Alternate with Ibuprofen and Tylenol after the surgery, ice to your cheek area the first 2 days, and take it easy! READ MORE

  • What can an oral surgeon do about teeth grinding?

The short answer is no. A night guard is your best bet, and is simply protective. There may be a malocclusion, or misfit of your teeth, and that might help if corrected. Some patients will try biofeedback training to alleviate that habit, but it doesn't work for everyone. There is no surgery that would be of benefit. READ MORE
