Dr. Patrick A Abbey D.M.D's Expert Contributions
  • What is the bump on my tongue?

It should be evaluated by your dentist. There are a lot of things it could be, especially if it didn't resolve within a week or two of you noticing it. READ MORE

  • How long does TMJ surgery last?

It depends on your diagnosis and what procedure you are having done. Some more conservative options, like an arthroscopy, may have more of a tendency for relapse. More extreme surgeries, like a total joint replacement, may have a very long term expectation for stability. You should pose that question to your surgeon, and ask their experience with the particular procedure you are having. READ MORE

  • Would I need to take opioids after my extraction?

It will all depend on your degree of pain, and whether YOU feel like it is worth taking something stronger. Your best bet is start on the meds while you are still numb after the procedure, and alternate every 2 hours between ibuprofen and acetaminophen (Tylenol). 1 or 2 opiod pills, if needed, would have an extremely low risk of an addictive potential. READ MORE

  • How painful is a tooth extraction?

No. You should expect some mild soreness, but it should be easily alleviated with over the counter meds. READ MORE

  • How long does it take to recover from wisdom teeth removal?

It depends on the degree of impaction, and the individual patient, but typically within 3-4 days READ MORE

  • What questions should I ask my surgeon about jaw corrective surgery?

See someone that is board certified by the American Board of OMS. Ask how much of that surgery they do in a year. More than 20 would be a good number for that type of procedure. Ask about treatment options, and for the degree of YOUR growth issue, about what they feel the benefits of the surgery would be for you. Obviously, ask about risk factors as well. Lastly, I will typically give my patients the names of a few people close to their age that had similar growth issues and DID have the surgery for them to call and speak to someone who actually went through it. READ MORE

  • Should I get all of my wisdom teeth extracted in one appointment?

That is usually the best way to handle it. Your recovery would be not much different with 4 teeth vs just 1 at a time. You should see a board certified oral/maxillofacial surgeon for the best result and treatment. READ MORE

  • Can I eat meat after an oral surgery procedure?

It depends on what the surgery entailed. You should discuss this with your surgeon. READ MORE

  • What causes dental cysts?

It depends on the type of cyst. The most common arise from the origin of the dental tissue itself during development. Some are more like a cancerous growth. READ MORE

  • How long does a mouth ulcer take to heal?

If they are inflammatory they should resolve within 10-14 days. If they persist longer, they may be more serious and should be evaluted READ MORE

  • How can I treat mouth ulcers?

If they are persistent and don't go away, they should be looked at by an oral surgeon to determine if they need to be biopsied READ MORE

  • Why do I need to go to an oral surgeon for my tooth extraction?

It depends on the degree of impaction, your age, and position of the tooth. Oral surgeons are the experts in this, and your dentist is doing you a favor. The procedure will likely be MUCH simpler for YOU and therefore lead to a faster, easier recovery. Something that might take the dentist 2-3 hours of struggling, multiple re-injections of local anesthetic, and extreme pressure on your jaw might take an experienced surgeon 15 minutes! READ MORE

  • How long does it take to recover from a tooth extraction?

Typically just within 2-3 days at the most. It depends on the tooth, whether it is impacted or infected. READ MORE

  • Is jaw surgery painful?

Typically not anywhere near your expectations. The area will usually feel quite numb for a period of time afterwards, and that helps. READ MORE

  • Do I need to remove a mouth cyst?

Most typically yes. Could be numerous types of bad disease that could get worse if left alone. Should at least be looked at by someone qualified, like a board certified oral/Maxillofacial surgeon READ MORE

  • Is it normal to get wisdom teeth when you're 14?

It could be. There is a very large Bell curve of tooth development. Some kids at 14 already have wisdom teeth like some 20 year olds. It all depends on how their x-ray appears. READ MORE

  • Can grinding your teeth eventually lead to jaw surgery?

There would likely be jaw pain issues, or problems with wearing of the teeth before it would reach a stage of needing surgery. At this stage, he should be evaluated for just possibly having a night guard appliance fabricated. This could prevent a lot of future issues very easily. READ MORE

  • How long is the recovery from jaw surgery?

Would depend on what type of surgery they are doing for the correction. If it is a “SARPE”, this could be a quick recovery and you might feel normal within the first week or so. If it requires a LeFort I osteotomy and bone plates, this may take an extra week or 2 to feel like you are “recovered”. READ MORE

  • Are jaw surgeries done in outpatient facilities?

It depends on what type of surgery will be required to fix your particular issue. Some of them can be accomplished on outpatient basis, some might require an overnight stay in the hospital. It would be unusual for it to require a stay any longer than that. READ MORE

  • How long does novocaine last after wisdom tooth removal?

There are different types of local anesthetic. Actually, Novocain (which is a brand name) is no longer used as too many patients were allergic to it, but everyone still knows that name. Lidocaine, the most common, might last 2-3 hours. Often with lower teeth, they will use Marcaine which could last 6-8 hours after. Ask you surgeon about expectations in that regard, as best to get started with some form of pain med BEFORE the numbness wears off. READ MORE
