About

Jessica Newman is an acupuncturist practicing in Long Beach, California. Dr. Newman evaluates and treats patients based on the concepts of oriental medicine. Acupuncturists complete their evaluations by getting a patient history and looking at and touching the body. Then, they place very fine acupuncture needles into specific points on the body. Stimulating these points and nerves is how Dr. Newman treats the patients condition. Many of the body's systems respond to acupuncture, and it can treat physical pain as well as emotional stress.

  • Why is acupuncture so relaxing?

In order to understand why acupuncture is so relaxing, we have to understand body mechanisms. In short, the body is normally in a parasympathetic phase. This is a fight or flight reaction to stress. It can show up in the form of nervousness and inability to relax. Acupuncture helps create a parasympathetic shift, into a rest and relax mode, for optimal healing! READ MORE

  • Can acupuncture hit a nerve?

Trained expert acupuncturists should do their best to avoid “hitting nerves.” Some points, like for sciatica/back pain, we are trying to access the nerve to release the shooting pains. Other points are incredibly minuscule. With each body being different, it’s the practitioner’s responsibility to check with the patient to ensure no sharpness occurs on these insertions to avoid discomfort of nerve activation. READ MORE

  • Which is better acupuncture or acupressure?

They’re both different, even though along the same lines. It’s almost like acupressure is a gentler form. It’s more like massage. It triggers similar points, meridians, and Qi. I’m unsure as to which would be considered “better,” but it seems to me for getting results for healing, acupuncture would be more effective, since it immediately activated the Qi of the points needed to heal. Both have their place. ️ READ MORE

  • How quickly does acupuncture work for back pain?

In more than 9,600 cases of back pain treated in my clinic, ~91% of them would, thank G-d, feel better, immediately… Another ~9% would struggle. In clinical experiences, it seems not only does the practitioner/patient rapport, as well as how long and exacerbated the problem is. READ MORE

  • Can acupuncture help your vision?

In acupuncture school, we were told that after age 8, it's very challenging to improve vision. But my father, Dr. Philip Newman, a master healer, improved his vision with eye exercises. My vision went from a -4.00 to a -3.25 when I did pilates for a full year consistently. A leading ophthalmologist told me when we strengthen the abdominals, we strengthen all the organs and tissues, including the eyes! For more, newmansacupilates@gmail.com READ MORE

  • Can you get an infection from acupuncture?

An infection from acupuncture? The only circumstances I could ever imagine, God forbid, for this to take place is if the practitioner didn’t pass/practice proper regulatory standards such as clinic cleanliness, needle disposal, fresh and sealed needle package usage, etc. In the proper circumstances, there should never be any concern of infections arising from acupuncture usage. • Why can't I sleep after acupuncture?

Acupuncture serves to switch us from a sympathetic, or a fight-or-flight state, to a parasympathetic, or a rest-and-relax state. For some, who’ve been under intense amounts of stress and fatigue for a long while, instead experience a jolt of energy after their acupuncture treatment. Sometimes, supplements for supporting the adrenals could be helpful if this is the case, or taking GABA after a treatment to enhance your sleep. READ MORE

As soon as you realize you want to become pregnant, it’s great to start focusing your acupuncture visits on points related to boosting your body’s natural fertility! For those who have had issues getting pregnant, it’s best to begin a course of consistent fertility-geared treatments for 3-6 months prior to additional therapies needed, the longer, the better! For optimal fertility boost, it’s best to also include traditional Chinese medicine in your plan. All the best of luck for a smooth and healthy pregnancy! READ MORE
