Richard Vaglienti, MD, MBA, is the Director of WVU Medicine Center for Integrative Pain Management, and an Anesthesiologist for the School of Medicine at West Virginia University; who specializes in Chronic Pain Management. He attained his Doctor of Medicine from WVU School of Medicine in 1986 and completed his Anesthesiology residency from 1986-90, which included specialty training in Pain Medicine, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Anesthesia. Certified by both the American Board of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine. He was appointed in 1997 to the faculty of Anesthesiology and is presently an Associate Professor; with a secondary appointment in Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry and Neurosciences. He has been awarded several honors throughout his career, including Best Doctors in America from 2001-18.
Vaglienti directs the Chronic Pain Rotation for residents of various specialties and fourth year medical students; provides regular neurosurgery, psychiatry, and anesthesiology didactic lectures as assigned; and helped develop the opioid prescribing curriculum required for WV state licensure renewal. He has been an invited lecturer at the national, regional, and university levels. Presently involved in several Institutional, State, and National Committees; he Chairs the Medical Staff Affairs Pain Management Committee creating uniform pain treatment policies and programs to decrease opioid use, and promoting alternative therapies throughout the Health System. Also, involved in several Integrative Pain Management clinical studies, such as being the first site to launch the testing of a non-opioid micro pellet implant for chronic pain.

How long does local anesthetic last after stitches?

Does alcohol affect local anesthetic?
Not that I’m aware of but anesthesia while drinking is a bad idea
Is topical anesthetic effective?
Yes it’s effective but only for pain relief or minor procedures
What type of sedation is used for an MRI?
Most of the time, a single dose of oral anxiety medicine is sufficient. Valium is usually the drug of choice.
Can you be put to sleep for wisdom teeth removal while pregnant?
During pregnancy general anesthesia should be avoided if at all possible except for delivery or c-section
How long does it take to fall asleep with anesthesia?
Depending on how much medicine is given and how fast the medicine circulates in your blood, 1-2 minutes.
Is knee surgery done under local anesthesia?
Depending on the surgery, general anesthesia or spinal anesthesia are usually used. Local nerve blocks can also be used to enhance post op pain control along with the above.
How do you anesthetize a finger?
Usually you numb the digital nerves one on each side of the finger at the knuckle. This would work to sew up a small wound or other procedures of short duration.

Is spinal anesthesia better than general?
Depends what surgery you're having. Regional anesthesia is definitely "better" for c-section because you don't have to manage the patient's airway with a breathing tube.
Can spinal anesthesia cause paralysis?
It is one of the risks but is exceedingly rare. If you take a blood thinner you should stop it so the medication is completely reversed.
How long does topical anesthesia take to work?
Usually 5-10 minutes, depending on what the medication is and in what form it is.
Why do local anesthetics cause vasodilation?
They block the sympathetic nervous system which maintains vascular tone
Can anesthesia cause confusion in elderly people?
Absolutely particularly if the patient is frail or has cognitive impairment
