Something that might take the dentist 2-3 hours of struggling, multiple re-injections of local anesthetic, and extreme pressure on your jaw might take an experienced surgeon 15 minutes!

Lidocaine, the most common, might last 2-3 hours. Often with lower teeth, they will use Marcaine which could last 6-8 hours after. Ask you surgeon about expectations in that regard, as best to get started with some form of pain med BEFORE the numbness wears off.
