There are several techniques for adjusting the pelvic area. The two most commonly used are Gonstead and Thompson. Both are hands on. The chiropractor analyzes the pelvic area to determine the listing, i.e., type of misalignment then places his/her hands on the correct contact point of the articulation, i.e., joint. They would then use the appropriate line of drive with the correct amount of pressure and thrust to realign the pelvis. It is a very simple and painless maneuver.

Why does my pelvis keep shifting?

This is usually caused by unequal weight bearing due to one leg being shorter than the other lending to tilting and rotation of the lower spine and pelvis. There are two types of short leg syndrome. Anatomical and functional i.e. acquired. Anatomical is not very common. It is when, during the developmental and growth phase, one log actually grows longer than the other which can be corrected the majority of times with a heel lift. The functional or acquired short leg is the most common and is caused by musculoskeletal imbalance. This can be corrected fairly easily with regular chiropractic treatment in conjunction with core strengthening exercises. If the condition goes untreated it can lead to the development of lower back, hip and leg pain. It also predisposes the person to the possible formation of spinal curvature and scoliosis.

Two things. Avoid heavy lifting, and don't have anything in your back pocket thicker than a handkerchief. When you sit on something like a wallet, it causes the pelvis to project forward on that side lending to sacroiliac joint misalignment and spinal rotation. The sciatic nerve passes over this joint on its way down the leg. If this joint is misaligned it causes muscle and ligament contraction that will irritate the sciatic nerve. Avoid heavy lifting because it could also be a lumbar disc problem. See a chiropractor before it gets worse and it will. Medication may help for awhile, but it will come back.

Yes, they can, but it takes time and patience. There are three things to ask: Is it possible to straighten, reduce or keep from advancing. These are important questions because there are different kinds of spinal curvatures. Simple, rotatory, functional and non-functional. Age is also a factor. I have resolved curvatures in children less than 12 years old in as little as six months, but a person your age has taken 12+ months. Periodic X-rays should be taken at least every 3 months to document progress and to revise the treatment protocol if needed.

As you probably know, costochondritis is an inflammation mainly of the articulations of the ribs to the sternum. It can also be felt in the back where the ribs connect to the spine. From a chiropractic standpoint, it is caused by contracture of the muscles and ligaments at these connections. This can trigger dislocation of the rib heads, lending to lack of normal motion. A chiropractor can adjust these misalignments therefore increasing mobility. They will also instruct you in specific stretching exercises to further improve mobility.

When you refer to your hips, I take it that you are talking about the sacroiliac articulation (joint). You can't "pop" it, but you can stretch the muscles surrounding it by lying flat on your back. Take one leg and bring it across your body, bend the leg, and grab the knee pulling it toward your chest. Same for the other side. As far as adjusting and aligning the pelvis, you should see a chiropractor.

It depends. If you are intentionally doing this on your own, like someone twisting their own neck with their hands, then the answer is yes. Forcibly "cracking" your back will cause vertebra to move out of normal position, eventually creating problems. Now, if your back "cracks" just from normal movement then that is hypermobility of the joints and is not harmful. In that situation, you need to perform core strengthening exercises on a regular basis to tone the muscles and ligaments surrounding the joints. Visit therabandacademy.com and there you will find the exercises you need.

Can chiropractic care worsen a herniated disk?

In my 37 years of practice, I am proud to say that I have not had one case where chiropractic treatment worsened a herniated disc. The treatment will either help or do nothing at all, but I believe it is definitely worth a try before giving in to surgery. It really depends on the severity and longevity of the herniated disc. I have had cases that were so severe that I wasn't sure if it would help or not, but I would allow the patient two weeks to show improvement. Most of these severe cases had excellent outcomes but others were so advanced that surgery was the only solution. If you choose to try chiropractic, find one that uses spinal decompression and/or lumbar traction, decompression works best. Also, if they offer non-invasive laser therapy, that would be a plus.

How long does it take for a herniated disc to reabsorb?

It depends on the severity of the herniation and your physical shape. Also, the type of daily activity performed. Sometimes it only takes a few weeks for retraction of the nucleus and then it could take months. Good nutrition and light exercise combined with regular chiropractic treatment can speed up recovery.

Understand, a disc is made of two parts, the annulus, which is cartilage, contains the nucleus, which is the cushion or soft part. Once this retracts, the tear in the annulus must have time to scar over to once again contain the nucleus.

Bad postural hygiene has two main components. One is the alteration of the normal spinal curves and the presence of vertebral subluxations. The second is weak core muscles. With this combination when a person tries to stand or sit correctly it causes discomfort and fatigue. I would suggest seeing a chiropractor who can detect, diagnose, and correct the spinal component. He/she can also advise you on specific core strengthening exercises. Good personal trainers are also an excellent consideration for core strengthening.
