First, you need to know if gallstones are present. If there are stones and the pain is characteristic of biliary colic, then surgery can be considered. This is an elective surgery and the timing and necessity of it must be discussed with the surgeon. If no stones are in the gallbladder, then one must be very careful because it is much more difficult to blame the gallbladder for pain in the absence of stones.

Gallstones are only serious if they get large enough to cause symptoms. They can obstruct the cystic duct and cause pain (biliary colic) or inflammation of the gallbladder (cholecystitis). If you have pain from gallstones, then this usually requires surgery to remove the gallbladder. But if you do not have gallstones, then it is much harder to blame the gallbladder as the source for abdominal pain. In this case, other explanations should be sought and I would be very wary of removing a gallbladder without gallstones to try to relieve pain.

I would be careful about attributing the gallbladder to explain pain in a 16 yr old. Are there gallstones present? If not, then even less reason to suspect gallbladder pain. Young people rarely have gallstones unless they are obese. Your son needs proper work up by a gastroenterologist. Gallbladder pain can only be treated by surgery to remove the gallbladder, but this should only be done in clear-cut cases. Make sure a proper work up has been done by a good GI doc.

Depends on the cause. If it's from infection like H. pylori, then yes, it will improve after you treat the infection. But a lot of gastritis found is nonspecific with no clear cause and that type doesn't go away. Last point is that most chronic gastritis doesn't cause symptoms. Look for other explanations rather than blaming gastritis for pain, bloating, burping, heartburn, etc.

Believe it or not, gastroenterologists are not even in agreement as to whether gastritis alone causes pain. Most people have some degree of gastritis (as seen during endoscopy), but
have no pain at all. Acute gastritis such as from an infection causes pain, probably, but chronic gastritis is a different thing altogether. Short answer is, nobody knows, and I would not assume that your pain is caused by gastritis. There are other possible causes, especially dyspepsia. ER and primary care docs (and some GIs) like to blame gastritis for all pain, but they don't have the evidence to back up their claims.

Unfortunately, there is no answer to your question. Anyone who tells you differently does not have evidence to back up his claims. There are no high quality clinical trials that have demonstrated that a diet can improve the inflamed bowel. However, in children with IBD, an elemental diet does seem to help, but it is a difficult and unpalatable diet to follow. Several large studies are currently bring conducted. The specific carbohydrate diet is being tested, along with others. We all eagerly await the results.

For IBD, without other available information, eat a sensible healthy diet of whole foods, avoiding a lot of processed foods and excessive sugar. At the same time, don't rely on any diet to get the disease into remission: take the medications as advised by your GI doctor.

Most people with celiac have no symptoms. If symptoms are present, then they can be quite vague and include bloating, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, or lab abnormalities might be present. Symptoms are not specific at all. You basically cannot make the diagnosis by looking at symptoms alone. Remember that only 1% of the population has celiac and that one must be on a gluten containing diet to make the diagnosis (using blood test for antibody and biopsy of the duodenum). Make sure that a GI doctor with good knowledge of the disorder is involved in making the diagnosis or ruling it out. Gluten-free diet is not recommended in the absence of a formal diagnosis of celiac.

It's mostly the result of genetic predisposition, combined with environmental exposure of gluten which may have changed over time as humans have domesticated it. There is nothing you could have done to cause it, but people manifest it to different degrees.

Make sure that the diagnosis is correct, because sometimes people are given the diagnosis erroneously and you wouldn't want to be on a gluten-free diet for the rest of your life unless the celiac diagnosis is without any doubt. For diagnosis, you need the correct specific antibodies elevated (anti-endomysial or anti-TTG) plus histology of the small intestine (duodenum) consistent with celiac.

It depends on the cause of the gastritis, but most gastritis is chronic and cannot be easily resolved. However, it is very important to recognize that most gastritis does not cause symptoms. Almost everyone who gets an EGD has some baseline gastritis, but it generally cannot explain symptoms that a patient might be having. So, if you were my patient, I would focus specifically on what symptoms you have and treat those, which probably won't involve trying to get rid of the gastritis. H. pylori infection is one of the only causes of gastritis that can be successfully treated. In general, it is recommended to eradicate H. pylori if a patient tests positive for it, but even doing this may not relieve upper GI symptoms.
