April 2020 Update
We have implemented new strategies in our office to protect our patients and staff. We have purchased an air purifier to decontaminate the air. We are also in the process of installing a new higher speed air vacuum to contain the aerosol. We will be receiving forehead thermometers to take temperature of all patients when they come in. WE ARE HERE FOR YOU AND TO PROTECT YOU!
When I entered the field of dentistry and established my own practice, HIV infections were coming to the forefront. At this time, in the mid 80's and into the 90's, there was no treatment for HIV. Basically, you got it and you died sometime later. During this, and forward to today, I have always told my staff, Treat everyone like they are HIV positive and have hepatitis too!! We are fanatic about hygiene. I would feel very comfortable sitting in one of my chairs and using my equipment on me.

Usually, decay is removed with a very fine and small drill bit that is revolving at a very high rate of speed. When I was in dental school, I sometimes took lab work home, and as a cheap substitute, used a piece of equipment called a dremel tool. It runs at a much lower rate of speed, so the drilling takes much longer. It also might be difficult to hold the drill and see into your mouth very well, which is way dentists don't drill on their own teeth. If you get through all of this, it still might be rather painful, since dentist usually numb up the area to eliminate any pain or discomfort. In short, best to have a trained professional do this for you.

It depends on the age of the patient and the reason for the procedure. As you get older, teeth become more brittle (like bones). Also, once a tooth has a root canal, it loses its internal source of nourishment and becomes even more brittle. I have seen teeth with 30 year old root canals, in good shape. But I have also seen teeth root canaled that had an extensive amount of decay. A root canal is done, but the tooth is so fragile, it ends up fracturing in a short time. Currently, in these cases, a dental implant may be a better long-term solution!

It depends on what your definition of better is? Gold is one of the best materials in the mouth. It wears only slightly faster than enamel. It fits well and is extremely durable. Its drawback is esthetics!. Zirconia is much harder than enamel. Over the years, you will see unequal and significantly more wear on the opposing tooth. I had a partial gold crown placed on a premolar tooth when I was 27. It was there and fine until I had it removed, 25 years later, as I did not like showing the gold in my mouth. So, it depends on what is important to you.
