Type or suspected of bacteria involved, location of infection, tissue involved, duration, severity, risk of further spread, patient sensitivity or allergies to medications are all factors involved in determining the antibiotic to use. If after a reasonable amount of time on a specific antibiotic with no apparent decrease or resolution of signs or symptoms of infection is noted, then a re-evaluation of the case and drug used is warranted. A new plan could involve a different medication or debridement of the area.

The fact teeth tend to move through out our life do to the forces on them. lower anterior crowding is a common occurrence weather you have had braces or not. Now that the permanent teeth are coming in, we are moving to finale molding of those shapes and positions. Getting those digits out of the mouth. There a number of different strategies to try to accomplish this. Employing multiple at the same time usually works best. A cognitive therapy like explaining to the child that the digits are causing a problem in the formation of his/her teeth, jaws, face, and the benefit of stopping. Address why the child is sucking the digits and alternate healthier habits. There are physical barriers that can be used with varying success like socks on hands at bedtime to cribs in the mouth to prevent digits in the mouth. Talk to your dentist about the options and referrals if necessary.

With gum disease you get loss of gum attachment to the teeth exposing the root surface of the teeth and making them more susceptible to decay. Many different medications can cause dry mouth from decreased saliva flow which can increase tooth decay also. So even though there are no studies I know of directly linking tooth decay to diabetes it can indirectly contribute to it.

I,and probably your dentist, discuss the options with my patients and have no problem with them seeing a specialist for any treatment a specialist can perform if the patient is more comfortable with that. I have heard of swabbing gums with whisky when children are teething to help with teething discomfort. So, you are not actually giving the baby whisky you are swabbing the gums with some form of consumable alcohol which is some what antibacterial. However, these alcohols contain sugars that feed bacteria. Discomfort and pain in teething comes from the presence of inflammation. The inflammation comes from the presence of bacteria in the area while tissue around the erupting tooth is reorganizing with the eruption of the new tooth. Bacterial levels are best controlled by gently swabbing the area with a warm or cool wet wash cloth. Keeping the area clean will keep bacteria levels down and reduce and or eliminate the discomfort or pain in tooth eruption making whisky unnecessary.
