Herniated discs might sound complicated, but they're fairly common! They are associated with a lot of pain & discomfort. To understand why they happen, we need to explore things that come together to cause them.
Think of your spine like a stack of building blocks. Between these blocks, there are discs that work like shock absorbers & help your spine move. With time, discs can wear out & become less flexible, making them more likely to tear or break. This leads to a herniated disc.
Imagine these discs like jelly doughnuts. Sometimes, the filling on the inside can push out through the tougher outside part. This can press on nerves & causing pain, numbness or weak muscles. Aging is a big reason for this, there are other things that can make it happen too.
Things We Do Every Day
The way you live your life & the things you do every day can make herniated discs more likely. If you lift heavy stuff using your back instead of your legs, it can put too much pressure on those discs. Importantly, twisting your body while lifting heavy things creates even more pressure on the discs!
Accidents & the unexpected
Sometimes, accidents can be the reason. If you fall or get a hit on your back, it can suddenly push that jelly part of the disc out. This isn't as common, but it shows that our spines can get hurt by sudden impacts.
Things Run in Families
Your genes, the genetic code we inherit from parents, can play a part too. Some people are born with traits that make it more likely they’ll get herniated discs.
Putting it All Together
So, a herniated disc isn't just because of one thing. It's often a mix of getting older, how you live & work, unexpected accidents & even things you're born with.
Proper treatment requires an accurate diagnosis. At Triangle Spinal Decompression, you’ll receive a thorough evaluation & correct diagnosis.
