Hand Surgeon | Surgery of the Hand Questions Hand Surgeon

ā€œWrist laceration?ā€

I have cut tendons and nerves. It happened on 16 Sep 20 and I had tendon surgery on 18 Sep 20. Also, nerve surgery on 25 Sep 20. I had to add nerve graphs and used NeuraWrap Nerve protectors. I started passive therapy around 4 weeks after nerve surgery. At 7 weeks, I started trying to make a fist and straighten my fingers. I haven't had much progress. I am really wanting a different hand and wrist specialist to look at it.

It is not uncommon with the location of your injury for things to get "stuck down" during the healing phase. Now that things are healed it may be worth while to go back in and free things up (tenolysis and neurolysis).

Frequently after doing those procedures people see a dramatic improvement in their function and decrease in pain. If you still have numbness and weakness, unfortunately that is not likely to improve.
This scenario is frequently complicated by stiffness and diminished motion.

Sometimes when therapy fails additional surgery to release scar tissue can be helpful prognosis is always guarded however better outcomes are achieved when close to full passive motion is achieved first

a more accurate prognosis could only be achieved by an in-person examination and discussion potential for improvement.
Iā€™m so sorry to hear all of that. This is a complex injury. Requiring multiple surgeries or procedures to remove some scar tissue are very common in the scenario. Second opinions are always useful. However, it needs to be in person so the hand surgeon can get a full examination.
