“How much protein should I have a day?”
I know protein is an important nutrient for our bodies, but, ideally, how much should we be getting everyday? What happens when we have too much protein?

The general rule with protein is that you have 0.8g per 1 kilogram of body weight (your weight in pounds divided by 2.2). That gives you grams of protein daily if you are somewhat sedentary. You could go up to 1g/kg if you are more active. Protein is an essential nutrient that fuels the body's production of muscle tissue, enzymes, hormones, neurotransmitters and other things so it's important to get sufficient amounts of protein in the diet. Great question. The amount of protein depends on your weight, height, age, and activity level. As well as if you have any medical conditions that would require protein modification. The general rule per the USDA Dietary Guidelines is 0.8 grams of protein per kg of body weight (1 kg = 2.2 lbs). Too much protein (mostly coming from animal sources) poses an increased load of work to the kidneys. It is also extra calories that can increase body weight.
It depends on your level of activity but a minimum would be 1 gram per kilogram of body weight. If you are very active or trying to gain muscle you could increase up to 1 gram per pound (2.2 kilograms) of body weight.
On average you should consume about 56 grams of protein if you are a male and about 46 grams if you are a female. Keep in mind that if you do a lot of physical activity or exercise, then you will need more protein.
So a little known secret, human mothers only produce 6% protein in their milk when nursing an infant in the development stage. Which simply put, when your human "house" was being built the trucks and tractors brought all the "building materials" to build you. During this process you only required 6% protein. Not that your human "house" is already built, how many trucks and tractors should keep bring more building materials? It is rare for a person to need more than 10-12% of their daily intake to be from protein.
