What should you do after an acupuncture session?

I am a 28 year old female and I want to be prepared for my first acupuncture treatment next week. What should you do after an acupuncture session?

Rest
No alcohol or spicy greasy food
The best thing to do is relax after a treatment since it will continue to work in your body long after you leave the table. Try not to do anything stressful or strenuous immediately after a treatment.
Relax. Eat healthy food. Rest if your body asks for it and listen to your body. Go to bed early... get lots of rest (healing happens when resting). And ask your practitioner if they have any thoughts on this. They are here to help you.
You can take a rest if you need.
After the acupuncture treatment, we usually recommend drink plenty of water and stay comfortable. Don’t plan a big workout right after an acupuncture session. Some people feel relaxed and restful. Some people are energized. See how you feel after the first treatment.
Be sure to drink extra water after your session and eat a warm, nourishing meal. I like to tell patients to try to take it easy and not to anything too strenuous. Especially after the first session, your body is adjusting to the treatment, so take care of yourself and allow proper time for this adjustment. Increase water intake and relax.
Normal Activity
That's a great question! There is no hard and fast rule about this, but in my opinion, one should relax after treatment. Whether that be taking a long hot bath, unplugging the phone, taking a nap, it's really up to you. But it's better if you don't rush straight to work or another appointment. That would be a little counterproductive to treatment. In order for the treatment to really take hold, it's important to really listen to your body to accurately assess what acupuncture does for you and within you. Too often, we don't stop and listen to what our bodies are trying to tell us. It's best if you don't allow the demands of life to take place right after a treatment. It doesn't mean acupuncture won't work if you do, but to really get an accurate read, just rest and relax. Good luck!!
After your acupuncture treatment you can't drink any water until after the holes close up or else you will be like a fountain ... just kidding!

Actually, you can pretty much do things as normal the things that you want to avoid is getting into water or in the rain, taking a bath or a shower for a at least a few hours. This is because the energy pathways may still be open and you want to avoid getting dampness in them. Also, avoid extreme temperatures too hot or too cold, warmth is better because it helps to make it easier for your body to keep yourself warm so that you don't use as much energy. Avoid caffeine & alcohol because these can be a diuretic by making you pee which can pull water out of your body and can cause you to become dehydrated. Refrain from recreational drugs. Avoid working out or doing anything too strenuous because this can undo the benefits of the acupuncture treatment. Skip the workout that day and you can pick up where you left off on the following day. Better to pee before your treatment then immediately right after but, the general rule of thumb is eat when you're hungry, sleep when you're tired, and drink when you're thirsty. Try not to go too long if your body is asking you for these things.
Just make sure you are hydrated, and if you are planning a tough workout, do it before rather than after your session.
Enjoy!
After acupuncture, take your time to get back into your body again, kinda like after meditation or yoga. Wiggle your fingers and toes. Breathe deeply. Perhaps you may visualize white light entering your body, growing brighter, and lighting up all around you, 3 feet in every direction. Only positivity may enter your sphere! Then, start moving as needed. Depending upon if you’re face up or down, move very slowly. If you’re face up, roll onto your side, using mostly abdominals and arms and legs to arise to sitting, instead of your neck. *Sit quietly a few moments. Drink some warm water (suggest you have ready beforehand, or have your provider bring to you.)* If you’re face down, slowly move your hands underneath your shoulders, and use your abdominals to push into a child’s pose (sitting back on your heels, knees wide, head resting down, arms spread forward. Slowly, a few breaths and stretches later, pull your abdominals to your back, slowly restack your spine sitting on your heels. Head is the very last thing up, abdominals leading the movement, rounding up. Same as with face up*
Great question! As for the acupuncture Itself, it’s best to breath deeply in preparation, relaxing your body, for each point, exhale, asking the provider to let you know, with a count of three, when insertions take place. All the best to you for your acupuncture experience!
Thank you for your question,

When I do acupuncture on a patient, I make sure that before they drive they are fully alert. For some acupuncture can be deeply relaxing. I also use the massage technique of Tuina to help reinvigorate a patient. In some cases, I provide peppermint tea if appropriate. Drinking something healthy afterwards is always helpful, such as spring water or unsweetened green tea. Some of the acupuncture points that we work on activate the kidneys for cleansing purposes. I don’t know your specifics. Your acupuncturist should be able to help you with understanding what effects are trying to be achieved and what the next best steps are.

Kind regards,

Hi,

You can do normal things after acupuncture sessions. Just drink more warm water than usual to cleanse toxins from your body.

Sincerely,

Here are our recommendations:
1. Eat a small meal before.
2. If you are doing physical therapy or chiropractic, a different day is preferable to schedule your appointment.
3. It is not recommended to go to the gym afterwards.
4. Relaxation is the best after your acupuncture treatment. If you have to go or go back to work it is fine, just no physical activities.
5. Do not skip meals (3 meals a day is ideal).
If you can get a couple of hours rest, that would be good.
Relax and enjoy how you feel
1, no swimming right away
2. no racing competition
3. Drink plenty of fluid
In the words of my teacher, no sex, drugs or rock and roll. You want to relax after your treatment and let your body adjust to it's new settings. We recommend no sex, alcohol or drugs (other than medications), and rest. Generally speaking, you can resume your normal activities the following day.

If your treatment includes working with the musculature, you may feel sore for a day or two. In this case, no intense physical activity until the soreness resolves. You can apply heat, liniments, or take an Epsom salt bath to alleviate the aching and speed up your recovery.
Relax and have some tea.
That depends on how you feel after the treatment. Not everyone has the same response to treatments. So, if you feel tired after the treatment, you should rest. If you feel hungry after the treatment, you should eat. If you feel energized, maybe you can start to organize your day or clean or get other chores done or exercise.

I cannot tell you how to act after a treatment, until you know how you respond to treatments and it isn't always going to be the same each time.
Recommendations after an acupuncture session is plenty of fluids, rest for the next few days, with no strenuous activities.
Thank you for your inquiry. After an acupuncture session, you should still lay down the clinic table for 2-3 minutes because your body need to adapts it for while, and within 2 hours please don't take a bath or shower because there are some very small holes on the skin.
I don't typically recommend any specific after-care for my patients. Occasionally, someone might experience fatigue or light-headedness after a session. In this case, it's a good idea to have a snack or light meal either just before or just after receiving treatment. Otherwise, my general recommendation is to go out and do whatever you'd normally do.

It is a good question though, and sometimes the answer can depend on exactly what was involved in the treatment session. Acupuncturists also often use things like cupping, guasha (scraping), moxibustion and/or massage. Sometimes these other modalities do have some after-care considerations. Best bet is to ask your provider and make sure they don't have any specific advice.
