  • Why does around my ankle hurt?

There are many causes for ankle pain. But at your age, if there was no trauma to the ankle such as a strain/sprain, there may be an issue with the mortice joint (the joint that connects the foot to the leg) or one of the tendons. I would recommend having it checked by a specialist such as a Chiropractor, Orthopedist, or Podiatrist. READ MORE

  • What causes tight hips and lower back?

Tight hips and lower back can be caused by several things. Overuse of the muscles without proper stretching is one reason, but often there is dysfunction of the sacroiliac or pelvic joints that cause a reflex tightening of the glutes, hip rotators, hamstrings and paraspinal muscles. An examination of the lumbosacral and hip joints by a good Chiropractor or Physical therapist should be able to determine the cause of your problem. Good luck! Take care and be well, Dr. Eric Miller READ MORE

  • Why do chiropractors use activators?

Not all chiropractors use Activators. When used, it is a less forceful way to adjust the spine or reduce muscle tension using a spring-loaded device rather than manipulating with the hand. I personally use it most when a patient cannot tolerate the force of a normal manual adjustment. But that's just my personal choice. READ MORE

  • Which exercise is best for foot pain?

The first thing to be determined is what is causing the leg pain. Is it actually the leg that is having the problem or is it the lower back or hip that is causing the issue in the leg? Exercise may not be the answer. Where is the pain originating from? Try to determine the source and try stretching the muscles that are most affected such as the hamstrings or calf muscles. Often, leg pain that is not from a strained muscle in the leg originates from the lower back. If this is the case, then try stretching the lower back with Cat-Cow yoga pose, spinal twists or knee to chest stretches. Strengthening the core is always a good thing. If you haven't been working out, start with planks. If the pain continues for more than a week or two, consult a good chiropractor for an examination to determine the cause of pain and get it fixed. Take care and be well, Dr. Eric Miller READ MORE

  • How do you get rid of back spasms fast?

First, the reason for your spasms must be determined. Are you well hydrated? Often, dehydration causes cramps and spasms, so drink more water. Spasms can also be associated with nerve interference. Find a good chiropractor and have an examination to determine the cause of the spasms. Stretching, massage, and manipulation can all be effective treatment. I hope you find this info helpful. Take care and be well, Dr. Eric Miller READ MORE

  • Which leg is longer with scoliosis?

Scoliosis can have a curvature convex to either side of the body and the presence of or lack of leg length inequality does not always contribute to the curvature. Sometimes a person can have a shorter leg on one side and the spine will shift toward the high side at the sacroiliac joint or L5-S! joint and the spine can be straight or even tilt toward the longer leg side. All cases of scoliosis need to be looked at individually to find the cause of the curvature. I hope this info is helpful. Take care and be well, Dr. Eric Miller READ MORE

  • Do slipped ribs show up on x-rays?

It depends on the definition of “slipped.” There is “dislocated” and that does show up on X-ray. There is “subluxated,” which is less than a dislocation, more like misaligned and that is more difficult to observe on X-ray. Palpation of the ribs is more definitive for motion issues with the costovertebral joints. A combination of palpation and X-ray is the best diagnostically. READ MORE

  • Can chiropractors adjust feet?

Absolutely. Good Chiropractors should be able to adjust any joint in the body. Foot manipulation is commonplace. READ MORE

  • Can a chiropractor or massage therapist help with migraine headaches?

It really depends on the cause of your migraine headaches. If they are caused by increased tension in the suboccipital area (below the base of your skull in back) or tension in the trapezius muscle that connects to the back of the skull and those muscles are increasing pressure on the greater occipital nerve, then both types of treatment would be beneficial. Massage is good at relieving tension in the muscles. Chiropractic manipulation can relieve misalignment of the vertebrae, which may be causing interference to the nerve and cause the muscle tension to begin with. It is always good to start with conservative treatments such as Chiropractic and massage to see if that treatment works for you. A good Chiropractor would be able to determine the cause of your headaches through examination and possibly X-rays, if necessary. After thorough examination, the provider should be able to recommend an effective treatment protocol. I hope you feel better soon. Take care and be well, Dr. Eric Miller READ MORE

  • How can I get rid of pain in the back after sleeping?

It sounds as if you may have got a "kink" or a muscle pull while you were sleeping on that uncomfortable surface. Lying down probably aggravates the existing condition. Try stretching the affected area for the next week or so while it heals. If the symptoms do not reduce after a week or so, then see a physician that specializes in musculoskeletal ailments such as a Chiropractor to have an examination, identify the problem, and get it fixed. I hope this helps. Take care and be well, Dr. Eric Miller READ MORE

  • Should I stretch before seeing a chiropractor?

It is certainly OK to stretch before seeing a chiropractor, but it is not necessary. Regular stretching is helpful to relieve tight muscles. READ MORE

  • How do you know if your ankle is out of place?

The first thing to do is to assess your ability to bear weight on the foot. If you can't bear weight without pain, you should get it checked by a professional. The next thing is to assess the ankle's ranges of motion. Can you perform dorsiflexion, plantar flexion, inversion and eversion without pain? Basically, can you do the alphabet using your foot to make the letters in the air? If you have pain or a feeling that your foot can't move in all directions, there may be a problem with either the joint or the tendons and muscles. If you are having pain at the area where your foot meets the leg (the front of the ankle is called the mortice joint), you may need a simple adjustment to that joint to reset the position. If you are having continued symptoms that don't feel like they are improving, see a professional and get an exam and X-rays. I hope this info is helpful. Take care and be well, Dr. Eric MIller READ MORE

  • Why do I keep pinching a nerve in my neck?

If you are pinching a nerve in your neck, it could be from misalignment of the neck vertebrae, lack of proper motion in the joints, disc problems between the vertebrae, arthritic change minimizing the area where the nerve exits the vertebrae or tight muscles around the nerve putting pressure on the nerve. Most of these problems can be helped with Chiropractic or physical therapy. READ MORE

  • What kind of physical therapy is used for rotator cuff?

It really depends on the diagnosis. There are 4 different muscles that make up the rotator cuff. These are the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis and teres minor. The degree of damage to the muscle or tendon will also make a difference as to what type of treatment is involved. Full-thickness and some partial thickness tears would require surgery. If the problem is more like impingement or tendonitis, then Ice, decompression techniques and stretching is a good place to start. If you are having a problem in the shoulder, a good exam should be performed to determine which muscle or muscles are affected and whether a MRI should be performed to get a more accurate diagnosis. Once a proper diagnosis is made, the proper treatment plan should be implemented by a physician or therapist that specializes in treating musculoskeletal injuries such as a Chiropractor or Physical Therapist. I hope you find this info helpful. Take care and be well, Dr. Eric Miller READ MORE

  • Can a chiropractor help with a sprained ankle?

Absolutely. Chiropractors are experts at treating musculoskeletal injuries. A sprained ankle should be thoroughly evaluated to determine how extensive the soft tissue damage is and whether or not there is bone damage. Sometimes it is necessary to adjust the mortice joint of the ankle to help the alignment and strength of the ankle joint. Depending on the severity of the sprain/strain, different treatments and recommendations for bracing and weight-bearing will be given. It is usually pretty safe to start with rest, ice, compression and elevation immediately after injury until severity of injury is accessed. Take care and be well. Dr. Eric Miller READ MORE

  • How do you loosen tight neck muscles?

There are a variety of stretches to loosen the neck muscles. You can google neck stretches and see many. However, if the neck is very stiff, it may not be just tight muscles. Misalignment in the neck may be causing the tightness in those muscles. Manipulation of the cervical spine is very effective at reducing those misalignments. If your neck has been stiff for over 2 weeks, you should have a physician that specializes in musculoskeletal complaints (such as a chiropractor) check it out. Take care and be well, Dr. Eric Miller READ MORE

  • How can I fix my forward head posture while sleeping?

If you want to help to improve the forward head posture while sleeping, start by sleeping on your back with a smaller pillow or a small neck roll supporting your neck. You should also begin doing neck extension stretches and exercises. Strengthening the upper back muscles such as the trapezius and rhomboids will help to bring the shoulders back and the head will follow. Don't forget to stretch the chest muscles as well. There are soft fulcrums such as the deneroll to help bring back the cervical curve. Keep working on that posture! Good luck. Take care and be well, Dr. Eric Miller READ MORE

  • Does sleeping on the floor realign your back?

Sleeping on the floor does not realign the back. If anything, lying on a surface that is that hard can cause misalignment, especially if you happen to turn to your side. Think of Goldilocks! Not too hard, not too soft. READ MORE

  • How should I sleep to fix rounded shoulders?

It is best to sleep on your back with a flatter type of pillow. Try to strengthen the pull muscles (trapezius, rhomboids, lats, etc.) in the back and stretch the push muscles in the front (pecs and anterior delts). I hope you find this info helpful. Take care and be well, Dr. Eric Miller READ MORE

  • How can you tell if your spine is out of alignment?

There are several ways to determine if your spine is out of alignment. First, look at your posture. If your head or shoulders are too far forward or if you have too much sway in the lower back or if your shoulders or hips are uneven when looking in the mirror, you have misalignment. If you have pain in the spine or peripheral joints, you may have misalignment. The best way to determine if there is misalignment(s) and what is causing it is to receive an examination from a qualified physician such as a Chiropractor or Orthopedic and have X-rays taken. X-rays are the gold standard for determining deviations from normal alignment. I hope you find this info helpful. Take care and be well, Dr. Eric Miller READ MORE
