Can one get diabetes later is life? Well, the majority of diabetics develop diabetes later in life. Unfortunately, like everything, time wears everything down including the relatively few insulin secreting cells in the body. When one develops diabetes, they have lost at least 66% of their insulin making capacity.

Well, that is a difficult question. What type is it, type 1 or 2? Regardless, in my experience, yes, diabetes becomes more volatile with time, thus age. Not necessarily. If the control has been good, then the volatility is less. I have patients who have had diabetes for decades with good, tight control.

What are the warning signs my son's blood sugars are too low?

At age 12 you should have a continous glucose monitor. It is considered standard of care. You can watch all his glucose levels be it up or down. Dr. Norwood

It is much easier to see if you have diabetes by having your blood sugar checked.

By definition, a type 1 diabetic makes either no or inconsequential amounts. More than likely, your friend is a MODY, or maturity onset diabetic of the young. HCG does not help diabetes. It does increase testosterone in men. It does cause ovulation in non menopausal women. It does not help weight loss. It is silly. All pregnant women with high HCG levels would lose weight. No one on god's green earth knows how to find a way to have patients lose and keep weight weight off. If they did, that would be worth 1 trillion of any currency. All claims that say they will solve the problem are not truthful. On the other hand, everyone knows how to lose weight, but only 3% can actually do what is necessary.

There is little information here. Generally if you have made major major changes in your lifestyle and you have persisted for some time, it may be reasonable to hold off. However if this is something new, where you have just recently followed a healthy lifestyle, more that likely you will start being less stringent with time, thus metformin would be reasonable so that you can keep your insulin cells from being stressed as much.

Do I have hypothyroidism?

To have those symptoms, the thyroid tests would have to be very much off. If your thyroid tests are normal then the symptoms are not caused by hypothyroidism.

Can being on too much thyroid medicine cause quick episodes of dizziness?

If your thyroid tests are normal, with a normal TSH, then the thyroid will not make you dizzy. If your thyroid tests are significantly high, then yes, there could be some dizziness. READ MORE

What tests should I take to see my thyroid levels?

TSH level only, except in very rare cases, (pituitary deficiency) if the TSH is normal, the thyroid level is normal.

There is none. A promising medication by Eli Lilly is in research now. There is 100 percent weight gain when any pill is stopped. Any method of weight loss has to be for life because if you stop any method, whichever - carb-free, keto, fasting, greenberry, or hypnosis - when it stops, the weight comes back 90% of the time. I have been at it for 35 years and have tried every method conceivable for weight loss and the best method by far in those who don't have neurochemical issues is the gastric bypass for significant weight problems. To lose weight is very difficult, and my heart goes out to you with those inefficient metabolisms.

Well, there is little data here. I, however, would embrace taking medication. If you are a diabetic, then you have lost at least 66% of your insulin-making capability. Medications such as metformin, bydureon, ozempic, trulicity help preserve your pancreatic islets that make insulin. Also, a very low-calorie diet and exercise helps tremendously, but you knew that.
