Hello,
The correct answer depends on what the reason for the neck pain is. If due to mild strain/sprain, then a period of relative rest until pain decreases followed up with good physiotherapy should do the job. May also help with mild arthritis for period of rest and then strengthening with therapy. So, it does assist in protecting and resting cervical spine. For a fracture, infection, tumor, it may give some temporary relief. So, yes, they can assist to relieve pain like any splint/brace, but how helpful depends on accurate reason for using the brace.
Good luck!

Depends on the surgery, age, health, etc. If at your age you are having a hip arthroscopy, you are talking 6-12 weeks at least depending on what is done, your health, weight, etc. For a hip replacement, which you are young for, you are talking 3-5 months. I had my hip replaced last year (I am older) and took at least 3 months before I felt normal. However, pain was relieved very quickly. Discuss with your physician.

Hello. If only index finger involved then common issues would be mild arthritis due to activities or tendonitis. This would be common with your work and workout schedule. You should get radiograph to rule out arthritis, calcification etc. Consider removing or altering use of index finger. If not using wt gloves when lifting then try these. See if certain equipment/grip are putting undue pressure on this part of hand. If you are using gloves may be irritating this area. Try contrasting after work/exercise (several minutes of moist heat followed by 5-10 minutes ice. Good luck.

The most important thing prior to your replacement is what is called “Pre habilitation “. You want to get all the stiffness you can to go away, if possible, prior to surgery. If you have a knee that is not terribly stiff you can sleep however you want. Some doctor do not like a pillow under the knee as it can contribute to stiffness. I never found this an issue with my patients. You can sleep in a normal bed or recliner. Most patients sleep on side or back until incision has healed. Generally you can sleep without worrying about hurting the knee. Just be careful when you get up not to fall. I suggest you discuss this with your surgeon. Good luck.

Most tennis elbow will be bad for awhile then improve. A very small number of patients require surgery. Initial treatment for a tennis player is to make sure racquet and string tension are appropriate. Increase icing to lateral elbow icing ( 3-4 times daily). Increased routine stretching both before tennis and other activities. Try more regular icy hot or Voltaren gel to elbow. If pain resolves work more aggressively with strengthening of elbow muscles. Therapy and injections with prp or steroid can help. Surgery is last choice and can be very successful. Good luck.

Yes most Orthopedic surgeons will treat nerve pain that is a result of a structural problem. So if you have a pinched nerve, herniated disk, tumor or cyst putting pressure on nerve, bone Spurs irritating nerves and many other problems that can be addressed with medication, therapy, bracing, shoe ware etc then we would care for these. Medical issues such as brain related problems, MS, Diabetic neuropathy and chronic non-specific nerve pain are treated by other physicians. Hope this helped a little. Good luck.

Hip or groin pain can occur for many reasons. The most common in your age group is a tendinitis or bursitis. Less common are stress fractures, cartilage tears called the labrum, sports hernia. If it has not been present for more then 3 weeks I would suggest decreasing the running, perhaps change the running surface and cross train if possible with bike or swimming. I would also increase my hip stretching exercises. When pain decreases slowly increase running at rate of 10%weekly. (Yes this is slow). If pain persists seek evaluation from Orthopedic surgeon within 3 weeks. I would suggest earlier if pain has been present longer or is getting worse with your modified workout. Good luck.

Yes, ganglion cysts can go away on their own. The longer the cyst has been present, the less likely this is. Also, location may be a factor. A dorsal wrist ganglion (top) is more likely in my experience than one present on the volar (bottom) side. I have followed patients for years with just a bump and no symptoms and others with significant pain requiring surgery. I have also treated patients that did not like the bump or simply the way it felt. They are non-cancerous and removal is your choice.
Good luck!

Hello. This is really not my specialty and really depends on what procedure is planning to be performed. It is best to discuss this with the surgeon. However some general comments for you. This is big surgery and not always successful. You should have exhausted all non-operative options (orthotics, exercise, shoe type etc) before any surgery. If the pain is so bad with just walking then surgery is reasonable. For most bone procedures you are probably looking at 3 months or more before simple walking is comfortable and I have had patients that it has been close to a year before they were happy and would do it again. Personally I would get several opinions prior to any major for surgery. Good luck.

There are several reasons for snapping in the calf after an Achilles’ tendon tear. These include scar tissue that did not organize normally leaving small nodules, bursa in front of and behind the tendon, calcium deposits(form after the tear) in or around the heal at the insertion. I would suggest initially as you did to place the boot until pain resolves and then hamstring and Achilles stretching several times a day for a couple of minutes particularly after sitting and before exercises. Also use voltaren gel or bio freeze several times daily with light Achilles massage. Finally a foam roller used on the calf muscles and hamstrings may be helpful. If all this fails after 3-6 weeks have a visit with your physician. Good luck and have a safe, happy New Year.

Ganglion cysts can be very hard (much harder feeling than some other cysts). They can increase and decrease in size and, depending on the location, can cause some pain along with stiffness. If you take a pen light flashlight and place it on the cyst, it will be somewhat translucent, bone will not allow light to pass through. Treatment is observation, aspiration, or surgical excision.
Good luck. Happy New Year.

Hello. Clicking if the knee is common and not an issue except when you are starting to have pain. In dancers this is a fairly common problem. Some is a result of the generalized laxity (flexibility) that dancers have. This is genetic and cannot be changed. The other issue is muscle imbalance. The lateral (outside) leg and hip muscles are stronger then the inner and this causes the knee cap to track abnormally. If you continue to have clicking and pain I would recommend you see an Orthopedic surgeon who after exam likely will refer you to a physiotherapist that can evaluate you and recommend a good strengthening program to rebalance the muscle strength. Good luck.

Hello,
To answer this question more precisely, I would need much more information. Dominant or non-dominant arm, previous injury, location of pain, etc. However, the most common elbow problem is, as you mentioned, tennis elbow, or lateral (outside) elbow pain. This can be incapacitating pain, pins/needles, and not being able to even lift coffee. Treatment is rest, and this can occur with a wrist splint and/or tennis elbow brace, stretching wrist and elbow muscles multiple times a day, ice massage multiple times daily, sport creams (bio freeze), and topical Voltaren gel. The problem usually is self-resolving, but if pain persists, see an orthopedic surgeon for better diagnosis and perhaps injection or therapy prior to any surgery.
Good luck, and Happy New Year.

Tennis elbow is due to micro tear of one of the wrist/elbow extensors. It rarely causes a long term problem and generally comes and goes. Yes you can go to the gym but limit exercises that aggravate the pain. Work out with a wrist brace or tennis elbow brace. Often times this is trial and error. Stretch wrist muscles prior to work out and ice massage after. It may take several months to go away. Good luck.

Hello,
Assuming that you have no major ligament injury, then the best way to gain stability in the knee is to establish good CORE strength (google Core exercises and perform at least every other day), hip and knee exercises to regain strength, and finally, work on balance (BAPS or balance board). Muscles and balance will take minimum 6 weeks to see improvement, so be patient.
