As with any field, it depends on the chiropractor. There are many philosophies in my field and different kinds of chiropractors. Disc herniations can vary from physical therapy to surgery, it depends on what is specifically going on with your disc herniation. There are only a few options out there to specifically treat the disc. PT, medications like gabapentin, epidurals, nerve ablations, microdiscectomy, surgical fusion, and "non-surgical spinal decompression" on a machine such as the DRX-9000. Surgical fusion is required in some cases; however, it should be a last resort.
Yes, a chiropractor can use multiple chiropractic techniques to help cure the effects of a disc hernia or herniation. Essentially, I would use mechanical traction to help decompress that herniated disc, thus taking pressure of the damaged disc and pinched nerve resulting from it. I would use anti-inflammatory techniques to reduce swelling in the area of the disc herniation. Also, I would recommend and use stretching and strengthening exercises to help maintain the decompressed stature of the disc after the corrective treatment is applied.
Yes depending on severity. Chiropractic care can improve posture which will relieve pressure on bulging or herniated discs. If you would like call my office at 7015325320 if would be glad to help you.
Many times we can it depends on how large it is and if it's pressing on the spinal cord in the canal.
This is a great question. It certainly will depend on the region, nature and extent of the herniation as well as what impact it is having on the surrounding neural tissue (spinal cord and nerves). These factors can be determined by a comprehensive examination from a qualified doctor (MD or DC) who is experienced in this area along with a MRI of the region. My 35+ years of clinical experience has shown me that many spinal disc problems, including herniations, can be managed with conservative measures which would include chiropractic care. It should be noted that the chiropractic approach/technique that is implemented needs to be clinically appropriate for the specific disc condition of the patient. Additionally, when a frank disc herniation that demonstrates on MRI, infringement to neural tissue with clinical signs and symptoms of nerve compromise on examination, it is my opinion that a neurosurgical consult with a spine surgeon is warranted. In this instance, a patient may still be able to manage their condition without surgery but is advised to get that surgeons opinion as well. I hope this helps.
