Because cleaning around your teeth is more difficult when you have braces, it is always recommended that you have a thorough examination with radiographs and also a dental cleaning before you have your braces put on. In addition, it is important to be very meticulous in your oral hygiene practices while you have your braces on. Gum tissues can get inflamed very easily and quickly during orthodontic treatment. Food particles have more places to stick to and can also increase your risk for dental decay and decalcification of your enamel causing white spots and weaker tooth structure. A fluoride rinse or a prescription fluoride toothpaste is also a good idea while in orthodontic treatment.
