No, it is bad to crack your own back. It may feel better for a few hours afterwards due to an enkephalins release. When that wears off you’ll feel like it needs another cracking. You are basically mildly spraining your back when you crack it yourself without the precision that a chiropractor uses. If you’ve been doing this frequently it can be hard to quit. Try just holding the muscles very tight for 60 seconds instead. This can help strengthen the joints and relieve the pain without causing injury. The pain relief doesn’t last as long at first, but in time it will be very effective, unless you need clinical help. Pete Egoscue wrote a few good books that offer good self help exercise routines for pain.

It sounds like you are talking about a torn calf muscle. Smaller muscle tears take three weeks to heal. Larger tears take longer. You can keep a muscle torn perpetually if you over stretch it or over contract it before the gap is healed. It will tear at the margin between the normal tissue and healing tissue when you over work it. The zone of healing is disorganized like a tangle. Over time as you work the muscle this tangle gets reorganized so all the fibers run in the correct direction. The exception is that some tears are so large that they heal with residual scar tissue. Some tears are so large that you need surgery to close the gap.

Shoulders are complex, and as I don’t know what your specific issue is, it is hard to be sure. But, here are some tips: Don’t sleep with your elbows above your shoulders because this stretches the blood vessels to the glenohumeral joint, impinging blood flow to it. One problem that makes the shoulder hurt at night is a slipped corachohumeral ligament. Chiropractors who studied sacro-occipital technique (SOT) should know how to adjust this. Another contributing problem is a latissimus dorsi muscle that doesn’t hold you back posture squarely. The exercise for this is done sitting on a chair with your thighs directed straight forward (not crossed, spread out, or pressed together), then arch your back into a sway and squeeze your shoulder blades together. Hold this got one minute. Do several times a day and see if your shoulder pain at night begins to improve. Your pillow should be the height that allows you to keep your neck in neutral, so it doesn’t tip forward or backward when you’re on your back, or if you’re on your side that it doesn’t tip sideways.
