There are only THREE main indications for someone to wear a standard neck brace:
1) post neck (i.e., cervical-spine) surgery, until healing takes place
2) for significant neck injuries with significant pain/instability--only for finite periods of time
3) for certain neck pain syndromes where keeping the neck in a neutral position is beneficial

**You ONLY want to use a neck brace for the SHORTEST TIME necessary for pain relief and/or healing purposes, as prolonged use of a neck brace WEAKENS THE NECK MUSCLES and thus can be counterproductive.

At your age, the GOAL for your BP long term would be keeping it under 135/85. If your BP is only mildy elevated, you can TRY exercise, wt loss, and salt avoidance. But if this not achievable within 3-6 months or so, and especially if your BP is running >150/90, then I would suggest trying medication.

How long does it take for the breastbone to heal after bypass surgery?

It takes about 2-3 months to heal most bones (in this context, the sternum.) But many patients needing a bypass have reduced circulation and thus may not heal normally. So, this fact may slow down healing of the sternum. Additionally, even if the bone "heals", there may be continued pain from soft tissue issues, nerve disruption, and other local factors that may result in ongoing pain. Plus, it is well known that some fractured bones may continue to hurt for a long time, even if it has totally healed. And rarely, it is well known that a sternum may not heal at all (though the overlying soft tissue/skin will heal and thus keep things stable).

Bottom line -- a patient will likely be much better in reference to sternal issues within 3 months or so, but a minority of patients may continue having pain and/or healing issues for many months after bypass surgery.

CT scan can detect SIZE and some ANATOMIC abnormalities (like cysts or nodules), but it can NOT, again NOT, tell anything about THYROID FUNCTION. THYROID FUNCTION is determined by a BLOOD TEST. Whether or not CANCER exists is determined by a THYROID BIOPSY. Thus, CT scan is not a very good test of the thyroid gland for the majority of people. But, it may rarely be used by thyroid specialists if certain questions remain after more common tests are done.

It largely depends on WHAT metal is inhaled and what the DOSE was (i.e., how much was inhaled). For example, if it happened to be THALLIUM (a very toxic metal that has been used to poison other people), you could lose your hair. If it was MERCURY, ARSENIC, or LEAD, other toxic effects could potentially occur depending on the DOSE of the exposure. But, if it was not one of these known toxins and you still don't have any obvious symptoms, it is unlikely you will suffer any significant or life-threatening effects.

You might have a bruised or fractured rib. But, as there is no specific treatment for rib injuries other than pain control (unless a broken rib punctures a lung, which is not common and frequently causes shortness of breath), I suggest taking whatever pain medicine seems to help and avoid any activity or position that increases the pain. You can try heat or ice packs (or alternate them) if it seems to help as needed. A rib fracture can take a couple of months to heal, so I would expect you to continue having some pain for days to weeks. As stated, if you get any shortness of breath or weakness, go to the ER or call your doctor.

Yes, the operation is a called a NISSEN FUNDOPLICATION, which can be done laparoscopically as well as open. But I would ONLY consider having this if you fail all the available medications AND you can find a very experienced surgeon who has done a LOT of these procedures successfully. The major negative repercussion of this procedure is that it could result in swallowing difficulties. However, it is now very rare that surgery is ever needed for GERD because the PROTON PUMP INHIBITING DRUGS (like omeprasole, pantoprazole, esomeprazole, etc.) are so effective.

It is totally dependent on what is causing the chest pain! Causes include life-threatening disorders like myocardial ischemia (i.e., heart attack), aortic dissection, pulmonary embolism, pneumothorax, gall bladder disease, and pneumonia. Non-life threatening causes include GERD, chest wall pain, anxiety, and costochondritis. So, the key is to quickly make the correct diagnosis and go from there.
