Without knowing what exactly your low back pain is coming from, the basics after any soft tissue injury is quite simple:

1. Sleep (7-8 hours each night)
2. Ice (not heat!). It is okay to apply moist heat (hot, wet towel) for only 2-3 mins followed by ice pack for 20-30 mins
3. Simple hamstring stretches before bed
4. Short course of an anti-inflammatory drug such as Ibuprofen (800 mg 3x daily with food for 5-7 days) or Naproxen (aleve) 500 mg 2x daily
5. No heavy lifting or overhead work
6. A great exercise to help ease back pain is 10-15 mins on a recumbent cycle

Well, your question is very vague and you have provided me with very little history. To be able to make a diagnosis, I would need to know a lot more information. Your past medical history, the type of work you were doing, exercise habits, meds, Any prior joint problems….etc. But there is one thing you must realize: the human body was made for one purpose: movement. The joints in the human body require significant movement in order to produce the joint lubricant so that they can function normally. Think about when you wake up in the morning or sit in a car on a long trip; when you start to get out of bed or out of the car, every joint seems stiff, and as you start moving the stiffness is replaced with normal motion as the joints are lubricated. Joints need regular and frequent motion.

How long have you been running; what is your usual weekly mileage? Are you a heel striker or more mid-foot runner? What kind of shoes do you run in? You see, there are a lot of factors, but I am not convinced that you have real “shin splints.” It’s an inflammatory process brought on by too much pounding in a short amount of time. Lots of other factors too. There is no “scar tissue” - that’s a healing layer of fibrous tissue that follows a high-energy trauma. Need more info!!

You have provided me with very little history. The description of your pain is not helpful either. When did it start? What makes it recur? Where exactly is this pain, thigh or leg, near the knee, medial or lateral? What makes it worse? Anything make it better? Heating pad is not a good idea. If it’s an inflammatory condition, heat will only make it worse. Is there a change in the skin where the pain seems to be located? Any skin rash associated with this pain? Ice is almost always a benefit if applied for a minimum of 20 mins. Can’t really help you without knowing more information.

The most common cause of back pain in young people is attributed to basically 3 things: (1) poor sleep habits; (2) tight hamstrings; (3) dietary excesses/abnormalities. No matter what age, you gotta get minimum 7 hours uninterrupted sleep. It also helps to do those hamstring stretches right before bed (also after any significant time of exercise whether it be walking, jogging, cycling, gym, yoga, etc.). All athletes know that you DON'T stretch before a workout, you stretch afterwards! (Before any workout, you are supposed to warm up: brisk walk/run in place for 60 secs, jumping jacks, treadmill, etc., whatever it takes to get the body temperature up slightly.) There are very, very few people your age that have structural lumbar spine issues… scoliosis is the exception, as are injuries, but I doubt that you have any mechanical issues at all with your spine (vertebral bodies and the discs, etc.).

Clavicle fractures are one of the most common fractures in Orthopedics. They almost always heal uneventfully with simple closed treatments, meaning a clavicle strap, etc. If there is in fact a non-union, after this much time has passed from date of injury, unfortunately, another surgery will be necessary to stabilize the fracture and promote good bony healing. Go back to your Orthopedic surgeon and ask him what he can do to provide a solid union. Was the fracture a 2-part fracture, or were there more than two fracture fragments?

First of all, you're too young to be having a knee replacement. Has the surgeon told you what to expect as far as longevity with a prosthetic knee? There must be some special circumstances as to why you are having a TKR. Believe me, there are way more important issues than how to properly sleep after your TKR surgery! Like, how long will my artificial knee last? Can I get an infection in my new knee if I have a skin infection, or say a bad tooth that has to be removed because of an abscess, or what about getting a blood clot in a leg vein after the surgery? What is your BMI (wgt and height/obesity number)? What are your other medical conditions? Do you have unstable diabetes? Are you on any immunosuppresive drugs? Are you a smoker? These are all things that can disrupt a TKR surgery or lead to a bad outcome. Total Knee Replacement surgery is a last resort procedure.
